Bringing Your Puppy Home

Whether you are having your puppy shipped or picked up personally it is very important to print out this page and follow all details. Your puppy will need to drink Gatorade for the first few days before introducing him/her to your filtered water of choice. Slowly mix the filtered water with the Gatorade till serving solid water. As soon as you get your puppy home you should give a good thick strip of Nutri-Cal. This will provide extra calories that in return will give your puppy the extra energy needed to explore her new territory. Please have a baby medicine dispenser to give your puppy her first few drinks of Gatorade immediately to make sure he or she is hydrated properly as going to a new home with new smells and sights may lower her urge to drink. Your puppy also may be hesitant to drink from his/her new water dish so take extra measures to make sure enough fluid is being taken in. If you are having your puppy shipped Nutri-Cal and Gatorade should be given immediately upon taking puppy out of carrier. He or She has been on a long journey and needs to be hydrated and given substantial calorie intake. Never give your puppy any type if raw hide toy!! Also no table scraps at all.

Within several hours of puppy being home please brown some lean ground beef and cook some rice, mix the two. Your puppy is sure to gobble this down and there you have started your cycle of eating. It is stressful for a puppy to leave it's mother and birth place. You need to give him or her constant reassurance that you are going to be there for her for at least the first 24 hours if not 48 hours. It is a good idea to provide puppy with toys to chew on {nothing eatable} so that your furniture is not mistaken for a teething ring. Never leave your puppy unattended as electric cords appear delicious at first sight. There are many other hazards around the home that could be detrimental to a small puppy that you need to make yourself aware of and move to high ground. Just because you have your cleaning agents and such hidden in a cabinet does not mean puppy cannot find a way to enter that area. This brings up the issue of getting your veterinarian acquainted with the new addition to your family. Please take your puppy in for an initial Puppy Consultation. Take a stool sample with you to provide for examination. In the event your puppy does get into something he or she shouldn't when you call your vet they will know exactly how to help you deal with the situation.

Your next step is to get your puppy aware of his or her bathroom spot. Since your puppy has come pre-paper trained newspapers will be in order. You will also want to have a treat on hand to give praise when a good job is done. I personally give the puppies Captain Crunch Peanut Butter Cereal. One or two per praising. This really makes them happy and gives them a little pep in their step to show you how happy they are to do good. Within 45 minutes of eating the above mentioned dinner menu puppy is going to need to make poo. Watch him or her closely and use this as your first chance to reacquaint the newspaper method. Once this has been mastered move the newspaper to the area you prefer whether it be a litter box destination or outside. If outside is your choice move the paper closer to the door of desired exit slowly then outside and on to the grass. Petsmart now carries a great dog litter and I have had great success with this method. Most teacup dogs are leery to head into tall grass and won't insist on ever going outside. On the other hand these are terriers we are dealing with and they are extremely inquisitive and may want to know what goes on outside those home doors. If your puppy is going to be allowed to venture outside you will want to use some type of flea control. I prefer Frontline. Your puppy is small so break the smallest dosage down in half and save the other half for next month. I even do this with my adult Yorkies.

Bedtime will be coming soon and this is a decision many vary on. If your new puppy will be your new bed warmer be prepared for interrupted sleep. You will want to know every time puppy moves for several reasons. One it may be time to go pee, two he or she is bound to want to find out where the mattress ends and has no foresight as to the location of the floor. Please take the time to either purchase or have the carpenter in the house fashion a set of stairs for the bed and or couch, pillows stacked up will work temporarily. Again your puppy is a Terrier and will want to explore every avenue. If you will be crating your puppy at night be sure to put in whatever material was in his or her carrier when brought home. This will be a familiar smell and help him or her rest better. Make sure you have offered puppy a bathroom  break before entering the crate. You will want to put the crate within an ears distance from your sleeping point so that you are aware of an movement as this may be bathroom time. Don 't be alarmed if your puppy whimpers a bit at first this should subside within minutes. A nice stuffed animal with no hard eyes or nose is of great comfort and help with the separation from the litter. The crate your puppy is accustomed to sleeping in is 36 x 24. I suggest putting a heating pad inside. Petsmart carries these crates. If you will be purchasing one try to get the one on display as the assembly is very complicated.

Be aware of day two, this is when puppy really gets into exploring the new territory and leaves all inhibitions behind. You are sure to get many laughs on this day so you will not want to take your eyes off of puppy. Things should start to fall into place from here on. All puppies are raised on Eukanuba Puppy  which can be purchased at Pet Smart it is strongly suggested they stay on this same diet. All puppies are raised with NuVet Plus vitamins which is a significant source of all the dietary supplements they will need as growing puppies onto adulthood. Let's all not forget the main ingredient to a happy pet of any kind is LOVE the others being Patience and Understanding. Your puppy will give you unconditional love for his or her entire life please give a little back if not a whole lot. Remember if your puppy is doing anything that offends you, you must let he or she know in a mild manner with no physical reprimand other than a slight tap on the muzzle. Biting, digging and bad bathroom choices are many of the things that are sure to be encountered and should be taken in consideration before making the decision to add any canine to your family.
